I was lucky enough recently to have a friend of mine at 343i, Dave Bolton, a concept artist here, show me some really cool tricks with using custom shapes for finding compositions. I will probably do a lot of these as I can already tell this is extremely productive and helpful. Depth can be created simply with shapes as you can see, the secondary light values are no needed much, if only maybe to indicate another element of depth. Dave pointed out to me that shapes can be used in many ways to define a composition as well as its depths. I have been finding these tidbits of info to be invaluable so if anyone else out there is exploring environments as well, give these a try, they are fast, stress free and very fun and you learn a ton! Thanks Dave!
